What it’s for

Quickly check points from a GPS, a camera or a spreadsheet; find out which country a ship or a buoy is off; or settle questions like the example, St. Peter’s Square, which is in Vatican City, not Italy.

If the answer surprises you, check the order (latitude first) and the minus signs for south and west. Drop one and New York ends up in Kyrgyzstan.

Where the country comes from

From the nearest address in OpenStreetMap, which knows which country each street is in, and from Natural Earth’s country outlines when the point is far from anything. In the US and Spain, from the official Census and IGN boundaries.

Natural Earth’s outlines are simplified: within a mile or so of a border in open country, double-check on the map.

Frequently asked questions

What if the point is at sea?

We’ll say it’s at sea. Territorial waters (12 nautical miles) and exclusive economic zones aren’t drawn.

Can I use degrees, minutes and seconds?

Yes, like 41° 54′ 8″ N, 12° 27′ 12″ E.

How do you handle disputed areas?

Like Natural Earth: by who controls them in practice. It isn’t a political position.

Which country names do you use?

The English name your browser uses for the country’s ISO code, which we also show.

Can I check many points?

Use “Plot coordinates on a map” to see a whole list, then tap the ones you need.
