How to use it
Type the name of a county or of its state in the search box: the list of counties is built into the page, so it answers instantly. The map zooms to the county, draws its boundary and shows every place in it as a dot sized by population, with its official city limits shaded in. It opens on Travis County, TX, which has 31 places.
Hover over a place, or tap it on your phone, to see its type, population, land area and density. The list next to the map has the same places: sort it by name, type or population, search it, and tap a row to jump to that place. Use “Cities & towns” or “CDPs” to show only one kind.
“Download image” saves the map as a PNG with a title and sources, “Download list (CSV)” gives you every place with its population, land area and coordinates, and “Print” prints the map and the full list with nothing else from the page. The address keeps the county you chose, so you can share it.
Cities, towns and CDPs
The Census Bureau counts 32,057 places in the 50 states and DC: 19,517 incorporated cities, towns, villages and boroughs, which have their own local government, and 12,540 census-designated places (CDPs), unincorporated communities that the Census draws so they can be counted. Places in the same county don’t cover all of it: whoever lives outside them lives in an unincorporated area, which the county governs directly.
Some places spill over into more than one county. For those, the list shows only the people living in the county you picked and marks the place as “Partly in this county”; the full population appears when you hover over it.
Suffolk County, NY has the most places of any county (159), followed by Los Angeles County, CA (142). Cook County, IL has the most incorporated ones, 137. At the other end, Loving County, TX, the least populated county, has just one, Mentone (a CDP).
Where the data comes from
Everything comes from the U.S. Census Bureau and is in the public domain. Populations of cities, towns, villages and boroughs are the Vintage 2025 estimates for July 1, 2025, split by county. CDPs aren’t estimated every year, so their population is the American Community Survey 2020–2024 five-year estimate. County and city boundaries come live from the Census TIGERweb map service; the list of places, their land area and their location come from the 2025 Gazetteer files.
Frequently asked questions
How many cities are in a county?
It varies a lot. Suffolk County, NY has 159 places counting CDPs, while Loving County, TX has just one, Mentone (a CDP). Pick a county to see its full list and download it.
What is a CDP?
A census-designated place: a community with a name and a recognizable center, like a suburb or a rural town, that has no city government of its own. The Census Bureau draws its boundaries so its people can be counted. On the map, CDPs show as white dots and incorporated places as dark dots.
Why don’t the city populations add up to the county’s?
Because many people live outside any city, town or CDP, in unincorporated areas. Under the county name you’ll see what share of residents live in an incorporated city or town.
Why are there no towns in my New England county?
In New England, towns are county subdivisions rather than places, so the Census doesn’t list them as cities. You’ll see the cities that are incorporated as such and the CDPs, which often match the center of each town.
Which is the most populous county?
Los Angeles County, CA, with 9,694,934 people in 2025. The least populous is Loving County, TX, with 52.
Can I print the map or use it in a report?
Yes. “Print” gives you a clean page with the map and the list, and “Download image” a PNG. The data is public domain from the Census Bureau; the base map is OpenFreeMap with OpenStreetMap data, which asks you to keep its credit, already printed under the image.
