City limits, CDPs and unincorporated areas
In the US, “city” can mean three different things. An incorporated place (a city, town, village or borough) has its own local government and legal boundaries. A census designated place (CDP) is a named community without its own government, like Highlands Ranch, Colorado. Everything else is an unincorporated area, run directly by the county.
We check your spot against the Census Bureau’s official boundaries and draw them on the map, so you can see exactly where city limits end. Your mailing address may still say a nearby city’s name: the post office doesn’t follow city limits.
How we find you
Your browser asks for permission to share your location. On a phone it comes from GPS and is usually accurate to a few yards; on a laptop it comes from Wi-Fi and can be off by a few hundred. We show the accuracy under the result.
Your location stays on your device, except to look up the nearest address and the official boundaries. We don’t store it anywhere.
Anywhere in the world
Outside the US, the town comes from OpenStreetMap; in Spain, from the official municipal boundaries. You can also tap the map or search an address to see which city any spot belongs to.
Frequently asked questions
Why does it say “unincorporated area”?
Your spot is outside the limits of any city, town or CDP. It belongs to the county, which provides local services there. Many suburbs are unincorporated even if their address says a city name.
Why is my mailing city different?
ZIP codes and postal city names were drawn for mail delivery, not to match city limits. Your official city is the one whose boundary you’re inside.
What’s a CDP?
A census designated place: a named community the Census Bureau maps for statistics, but which has no city government of its own.
Location access is blocked. What can I do?
Allow location for this site in your browser settings, or simply tap your spot on the map or type an address.
Do you store my location?
No. It’s used once for the lookup and never saved. If you share the link, the point is part of the page address.
