How your elevation is worked out

First your browser is asked for your location, which it gets from GPS, Wi‑Fi or the cell network. Those coordinates are then looked up in a digital elevation model: the Terrain Tiles, which combine the best public data for each area, such as the USGS 3D Elevation Program in the United States and NASA’s SRTM elsewhere.

The number is the height of the ground at that point above mean sea level. If you’re on a high floor, in a tower or on a plane, that extra height isn’t included.

Why doesn’t it match my GPS altitude?

GPS measures height above an ellipsoid, a mathematical shape that doesn’t follow sea level, and the gap between the two can be tens of meters depending on where you are. Many phones correct for it, but GPS is still less precise vertically than horizontally, and the reading changes with the signal.

A terrain model doesn’t depend on the signal: it always gives the same height for the same point. That’s why the number on this page is steadier than the one in a GPS app.

How accurate is it?

What matters most is where your device places you. With GPS the margin is a few meters; with Wi‑Fi or the cell network it can be tens or hundreds of meters, which in the mountains changes the elevation a lot. That’s why we show the margin your device reports. If in doubt, tap the exact spot on the map.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need GPS?

No. Just let your browser use your location. If you’d rather not, search for the place by name or tap it on the map.

Do you store my location?

No. Mapsfera doesn’t store anything. To get the elevation and the place name, the coordinates are sent to the Terrain Tiles on Amazon Web Services (or to Spain’s IGN for points in Spain) and to the Photon place search from OpenStreetMap, and nowhere else.

Can I check the elevation of another place?

Yes. Search for it or tap it on the map. The page address keeps the point, so you can share it with a link.

Why is my elevation negative?

Some places are below sea level, like Death Valley. And if you tap the sea, the global source gives the depth of the seabed.

Can I see it in meters?

Yes. Switch between feet and meters with the button on the reading.
