Which countries are on it

The map has 49 countries, counting UN members plus Vatican City. Armenia, Azerbaijan, Cyprus, Georgia, and Turkey sit between Europe and Asia and are included, as in many textbooks. Andorra, Liechtenstein, Malta, Monaco, San Marino, and Vatican City are so small they get a circle so you can see them.

Kosovo, Gibraltar, Jersey, Guernsey, Isle of Man, Åland, and Faroe Islands are drawn but not numbered or labeled: they are territories of another country or not UN members. Russia is the largest country (6,612,070 sq mi in all, including its Asian part); next comes France, at 234,136 sq mi. The smallest is Vatican City.

Number key

Numbers follow alphabetical order. Albania, Andorra, Cyprus, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, Malta, Monaco, Montenegro, San Marino, and Vatican City are too small to carry a number on the map but keep their number in the table. With each country’s capital, for the capitals version:

Frequently asked questions

Can I use it in class?

Yes, it’s free. Print it, copy it and hand it out as many times as you like. If you post it on a blog or a class website, credit “Mapsfera · data Natural Earth”.

How do I print it on US Letter paper?

Choose A4 and click “Download PDF”. In the print window, pick Letter and “Fit to page” (or “Scale to fit”). The margins are wide enough that nothing gets cut off.

What order are the numbers in?

Alphabetical, from 1 to the last one. That makes the key easy to follow when you grade, and it’s the same key the worksheet’s answer page uses.

How many countries are in Europe?

It depends on where you draw the line with Asia. This map numbers 49: 44 without Armenia, Azerbaijan, Cyprus, Georgia, and Turkey, which straddle the two continents.
