Number key

In the numbered version, each state gets a number in alphabetical order, from 1 (Alabama) to 50 (Wyoming). The labeled version writes each state’s name where it fits and its two-letter postal abbreviation where it doesn’t. Connecticut, Delaware, New Hampshire, New Jersey, Rhode Island, and Vermont are too small for a number on the map but keep their number in the table. Washington, D.C., is drawn but not numbered, since it isn’t a state.

Facts for the classroom

Alaska is by far the largest state, at 586,435 sq mi, about 533 times the size of Rhode Island, the smallest. Texas comes second, at 265,925 sq mi. Alaska and Hawaii are drawn in insets, not to scale and not in their real position, as on most US maps.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use it in class?

Yes, it’s free. Print it, copy it and hand it out as many times as you like. If you post it on a blog or a class website, credit “Mapsfera · data US Census Bureau”.

How do I print it on US Letter paper?

Choose A4 and click “Download PDF”. In the print window, pick Letter and “Fit to page” (or “Scale to fit”). The margins are wide enough that nothing gets cut off.

What order are the numbers in?

Alphabetical, from 1 to the last one. That makes the key easy to follow when you grade, and it’s the same key the worksheet’s answer page uses.

Why are Alaska and Hawaii in boxes?

Alaska lies far to the northwest and Hawaii far out in the Pacific. Drawing them in place would shrink the rest of the country, so US maps move them into insets below the lower 48 states. Alaska is also drawn smaller than its true size.
