Why the US–Europe difference changes in March and in the fall
The US and Europe change their clocks on different dates. The US springs forward on the second Sunday in March and falls back on the first Sunday in November; the European Union and the UK, on the last Sundays in March and October. For a few weeks one side has changed and the other hasn’t, so the gap shrinks by an hour.
In 2026, New York changes its clocks on March 8 and November 1 and London on March 29 and October 25. That’s why they’re 5 h apart for most of the year and 4 h apart during those weeks:
| From | To | Difference |
|---|---|---|
| January 1 | March 7 | 5 h |
| March 8 | March 28 | 4 h |
| March 29 | October 24 | 5 h |
| October 25 | October 31 | 4 h |
| November 1 | December 31 | 5 h |
Most of Canada, and Cuba, change on the same dates as the US. Most of Mexico stopped changing its clocks in 2022, except for some border towns that follow the US calendar.

Phoenix and Honolulu never change their clocks, so their gap with New York grows by an hour in summer. In the Southern Hemisphere, summer runs from December to March.
How it works
Each place’s time comes from its time zone. If you search for it by name, the zone is found with the timezone-boundary-builder boundaries (based on OpenStreetMap), just like in the time zone finder; if you pick a zone from the list, it’s used as is.
Your browser works out the difference, the clock-change dates and the planner hours with the IANA time zone database, which also handles 23- and 25-hour days: on a changeover day, the planner skips or repeats an hour.
Frequently asked questions
What’s the time difference between New York and London?
5 h for most of the year, with London ahead. For a few weeks in March and around the end of October, it’s 4 h, because the US and the UK change their clocks on different days.
What’s the difference between Eastern and Pacific time?
Three hours all year: when it’s noon in New York, it’s 9 a.m. in Los Angeles. Both change their clocks on the same days.
What working hours does the planner use?
9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday to Friday, in each place’s local time. You can change the hours; weekends never count as working days.
How do I share a comparison?
Use the Share button: the link keeps the places, in order, and the date if it isn’t today. Whoever opens it sees the times for their own moment.
