What address you get
The nearest address in OpenStreetMap: a house number on a street, a named building, or just the street if there are no house numbers nearby. Next to it we show how far it is from your point. That distance is the key: 30 feet away, that’s your address; 1,000 feet away, it’s only a landmark to get your bearings.
In the US we add the official geography from the Census Bureau: the city or census designated place (or “unincorporated”), the county with its FIPS code, the state and the ZIP Code Tabulation Area. In Spain the address comes from CartoCiudad, the official street map, with its postal code and municipality.
Worked examples: the official geography of a point
The address comes from OpenStreetMap, but the city, county and ZIP code area come from the Census Bureau, and they hold a few surprises:
| Coordinates | What’s there | City or place | County | ZIP area |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 40.75797, -73.98554 | Times Square | New York | New York County, NY | 10036 |
| 40.7812, -73.9665 | Central Park | New York | New York County, NY | 10024 |
| 38.8977, -77.0365 | The White House | Washington | District of Columbia | 20006 |
| 37.8199, -122.4783 | Golden Gate Bridge, mid-span | San Francisco | San Francisco County, CA | None (water) |
| 40.7259, -73.5143 | Levittown, Long Island | Levittown (CDP) | Nassau County, NY | 11756 |
| 36.0617, -112.1077 | Grand Canyon, Mather Point | Grand Canyon Village (CDP) | Coconino County, AZ | 86023 |
| 44.4605, -110.8281 | Old Faithful, Yellowstone | Unincorporated | Teton County, WY | 82190 |
| 39.0968, -120.0324 | Middle of Lake Tahoe | Unincorporated | Placer County, CA | None (water) |
Looked up with this tool on October 31, 2026, using the Census Bureau’s TIGERweb boundaries.
The White House is a good lesson in ZIP codes: its mail goes to 20500, a ZIP code reserved for it that covers no area, so the Census ZIP code area around it is 20006. Points on water, like the middle of the Golden Gate or of Lake Tahoe, are still in a county and a state, but in no ZIP code area.
Reading the result
The big line is the address; below it, its ZIP code, city, state and country, and the distance if it’s more than about 50 feet. The table adds the county with its FIPS code, the official city (or “unincorporated”), the country and the point’s coordinates.
“Copy details” copies the whole table as text, ready for an email, a report or a spreadsheet, and “Share” gives you a link that opens the same point.
When the nearest address misleads
- On a corner or in the middle of a block, the closest house number may be on the next street over, even if the front door faces another one.
- Big sites (hospitals, malls, campuses, airports) have many entrances, and the nearest address isn’t always the main one.
- House numbers are missing in parts of OpenStreetMap, especially in rural areas, so you may get only the street or a named place.
- Along highways and in parks, the nearest address can be a long way off: check the distance before you rely on it.
What people use it for
- Turning GPS coordinates into an address for 911, a tow truck or a delivery driver.
- Filling in an insurance claim or an accident report with the address of the exact spot.
- Adding addresses to photos, field inspections, utility poles or service calls.
- Checking whether the coordinates in a listing or a database really match the street they claim.
Common mistakes
Swapped latitude and longitude, or a missing minus sign: every point in the US has a negative longitude. Coordinates copied from Google Maps or a phone look like “40.75797, -73.98554” and can be pasted as they are.
If you have UTM coordinates (two big numbers in meters), paste them with the zone in front, like “18T 585630 4512385”.
Frequently asked questions
Is this the exact address of the point?
It’s the nearest one. In a city it’s usually a few yards away; in the countryside it can be far, and we tell you how far.
Why is there no house number?
OpenStreetMap doesn’t have house numbers everywhere. In that case you get the nearest street or named place.
Why is the ZIP code different from the one on my mail?
We show the Census ZIP Code Tabulation Area, which matches mailing ZIP codes almost everywhere. ZIP codes for a single building or P.O. boxes, like the White House’s 20500, have no area of their own.
What does “unincorporated” mean?
The point isn’t inside any city or town, so the county runs local services there. The mailing address may still use a nearby city’s name.
Can I convert many coordinates?
This tool does one at a time. To see a whole list, use “Plot coordinates on a map”.
Can I use degrees, minutes and seconds?
Yes, like 40° 45′ 29″ N, 73° 59′ 8″ W, plus UTM with its zone, MGRS, Plus Codes and Google Maps links.
Is it free?
Yes, free and with no sign-up. Nothing you type is stored.
