Boundaries: timezone-boundary-builder (© OpenStreetMap). Your browser works out the time with the IANA time zone database.

How to use it

  1. Pick a place

Type the name of a city or town, tap any point on the map (even at sea) or press “My location.”

  2. Read the time

You’ll see the time zone and its name, the live local time, the UTC offset, whether it uses daylight saving time and how far it is from your own time.

  3. Share or compare

The page link keeps the point. “Compare with another place” opens the time difference calculator with this place already added.

Time zones on the map vs. time zones in your phone

In theory, a time zone is a 15° band of longitude: Earth turns 360° in 24 hours, 15° an hour. In practice, each country picks its own time, so real boundaries follow borders, not meridians. China spans about 60° of longitude and still uses a single time.

This tool gives you the zone from the IANA time zone database, the one phones and computers use: an area where clocks have agreed since 1970, with a name like America/New_York or America/Phoenix. The US mainland has more than 20 of them, because some counties in Indiana, Kentucky or North Dakota have changed zones since 1970.

Time in some zones in 2026

UTC offset in winter and summer, and the days the clocks change, worked out with the IANA time zone database. In the Southern Hemisphere, daylight saving time runs from October to April, so the summer offset there is January’s.

How it works

The zone comes from timezone-boundary-builder, version 2026e, which draws each zone along OpenStreetMap borders and adds the sea: territorial waters belong to the zone on the coast, and the open ocean is split into 15° bands, known as nautical time. We simplified the boundaries to 50 meters and cut them into tiles: your first lookup downloads about 20 KB, and later ones in the same region are instant.

We measured the error with 20,000 random points close to borders: every point that lands in the wrong zone is less than 50 meters from the line. If you’re right on the edge between two zones, check a local clock.

The time, UTC offset and change dates aren’t stored in the page: your browser works them out with the IANA time zone database, the same one your phone uses, which updates along with your system.

Overlapping zones

In a few places, the boundaries of two zones overlap. In Xinjiang, China, people use both the official Beijing time and Xinjiang time (Asia/Urumqi, two hours behind), and there are overlaps in disputed areas such as Abkhazia or the West Bank. There, the tool shows one of them first, in alphabetical order, and points out the other.

Frequently asked questions

What is UTC?

Coordinated Universal Time, the world’s reference time. It matches Greenwich time without daylight saving time. New York is 5 hours behind UTC in winter (UTC−5) and 4 hours behind in summer (UTC−4).

Why does Arizona have the same time as California in summer?

Arizona uses Mountain Standard Time (UTC−7) all year and doesn’t switch to daylight saving time. California does, moving from UTC−8 to UTC−7, so from March to November both show the same time. The Navajo Nation, in northeast Arizona, does use daylight saving time.

What time is used at sea?

Within territorial waters (12 nautical miles), the time on the coast. On the high seas, nautical time: one 15° band of longitude per hour, with no daylight saving time. The IANA database calls them Etc/GMT with the sign flipped, so Etc/GMT+3 means UTC−3.

How accurate is the line between two zones?

It follows OpenStreetMap borders, with an error of less than 50 meters from simplification. The boundaries show the time people actually use: Phenix City, Alabama, comes up on Eastern Time, like Columbus, the Georgia city across the river.

What happens with my location?

“My location” asks your browser for permission, and the zone is looked up on your own device. To name the point, its coordinates go to Photon, the OpenStreetMap place search.
