The 52 provinces in the quiz

They’re Spain’s 50 provinces plus the autonomous cities of Ceuta and Melilla. The Canary Islands sit in an inset at the bottom left.

2 are so small that they have a circle you can tap; at sea, tapping close to it is enough.

How to play

In Point mode we name a province and you tap it on the map; in Type mode one lights up and you type its name (accents don’t matter); and in Time trial you get 6 seconds per question. If you miss, we show you where it was, which way it lies and a hint drawn from the data: its community and how many provinces it has.

Each game has 10, 20 or all the questions, and at the end you can practice just the ones you missed. Your best score for each mode is saved in this browser only: neither we nor anyone else can see it, and there’s no sign-up.

The hardest ones

The smallest provinces are the hardest, since they barely show on the map: Gipuzkoa (764 sq mi), Bizkaia (854 sq mi), and Álava (1,171 sq mi). Zoom in with the buttons or two fingers to tap them.

And watch out for look-alike names: Palencia and Valencia.

Tips to learn them

  • Trace the coast first, from Girona down to Huelva and from Pontevedra across to Gipuzkoa: almost half the provinces touch the sea. Then fill in the interior, region by region.
  • Castile and León is the community with the most provinces (9); 7 communities have just one: Asturias, Balearic Islands, Cantabria, Community of Madrid, Region of Murcia, Navarre, and La Rioja.

Playing in class

Split the class by region: each group learns the provinces of one community, then challenges the rest with the challenge link.

With the Challenge your class link, everyone gets the same questions in the same order, with no accounts or passwords, and each student sees their own score, time and streak. To practice on paper, there’s a printable worksheet of the same map with an answer key.

Frequently asked questions

How many provinces does Spain have?

50. The quiz has 52 places because it also includes Ceuta and Melilla, which are autonomous cities.

Is there a capitals quiz?

Yes: “Spanish provincial capitals”, on its own page. The Capitals button in the quiz panel takes you there.

Where is my best score saved?

In this browser: your best score for each mode and number of questions. Neither we nor anyone else can see it; if you clear your browser data, it’s gone.

Is there a printable worksheet of Spain?

Yes: a worksheet with the numbered map, three activities and an answer key. You’ll find it under Printable worksheets below, next to the blank map.
