What’s on the worksheet

The first page has a title, lines for name, class and date, the map with a number on each state, country or province, and up to three activities: write the names for the numbers asked, color some areas of the map, and answer three questions. The second page is the answer key: the map with the areas to color already shaded, the answers, and the full list of numbers with their names.

Answers come from the data, not from memory: state areas come from the US Census Bureau boundaries, country areas from the World Bank (or, where it has no comparable figure, measured on the map and given as approximate), capitals from Natural Earth, and Spain’s figures from the Instituto Geográfico Nacional and the INE census. So “Which is the smallest state?” has a checked answer: Rhode Island.

Using it in class

Every worksheet has a number. The same map, options and number always give the same worksheet, and the link from “Copy link” stores all of it: send it to a colleague or save it for next year. If you want each student to get a different one, click “New worksheet” before printing each copy: the numbers asked, the areas to color and the questions all change.

The level changes what gets asked. Easy picks the largest states or countries, which are easier to find, and counting or “which is the largest” questions. Hard includes everything, the smallest too, and comparison questions.

Frequently asked questions

Is it free?

Yes. You can print and copy the worksheets for your class as often as you like, without signing up. If you post them on a blog or class website, credit “Mapsfera” and the data source shown at the foot of the page.

How do I give the whole class the same worksheet?

Print one and photocopy it, or send the link from “Copy link”: it includes the map, activities, level and worksheet number, so it opens exactly the same worksheet.

Can I print it without the answer key?

Yes: in the print window, under “Pages”, choose just page 1. The answer key is page 2.

Which maps are there?

The 50 US states, each state by its counties, the world, Europe, the five continents, more than 40 countries by their states, provinces or regions, and Spain by province or by region, plus each of Spain’s 17 regions. Maps with fewer than 6 places (the United Kingdom, Denmark, Delaware, Hawaii and Rhode Island) are left out, since the naming activity asks for at least 6. The same maps, without activities, are in the blank maps section.
