New York on the map
New York has 62 counties; only 24 states have fewer. The largest is St. Lawrence, with 2,680 sq mi of land, and the smallest is New York, with 23 sq mi: St. Lawrence is about 118 times bigger.
The state capital, Albany, is in Albany County. The capital version marks it on the map.
Kings County is the most populous, with 2,653,963 people in 2025, or 13% of the state. The least populous is Hamilton, with 5,006. Since 2020, Rockland has grown the fastest (+5.6%) and Schuyler has lost the most (−5.4%).
New York City’s five boroughs are five counties: the Bronx (Bronx County), Brooklyn (Kings), Manhattan (New York), Queens (Queens) and Staten Island (Richmond).
What each county borders
Saratoga borders the most counties in the state: 8 (Albany, Fulton, Hamilton, Montgomery, Rensselaer, Schenectady, Warren, and Washington). Richmond borders no other county: it is surrounded by water.
21 counties touch another state. 10 border Pennsylvania: Allegany, Broome, Cattaraugus, Chautauqua, Chemung, Delaware, Orange, Steuben and 2 more. 5 border New Jersey: Bronx, New York, Orange, Rockland, and Westchester. 4 border Vermont: Clinton, Essex, Rensselaer, and Washington. 3 border Massachusetts: Columbia, Dutchess, and Rensselaer. 3 border Connecticut: Dutchess, Putnam, and Westchester.
6 counties border Canada: Clinton, Erie, Franklin, Jefferson, Niagara, and St. Lawrence.
17 counties are on the coast or on the Great Lakes. 26 counties are fully inland, with no coast and no border with another state or country.
Number key
Numbers follow alphabetical order, from 1 (Albany) to 62 (Yates). Bronx, Kings, New York, Queens, Richmond, and Seneca are too small for a number on Letter or A4 but keep their number in the table; Tabloid and A3 fit more. Area is land area, without lakes or sea, and population is the Census estimate for July 1, 2025; “Borders” counts neighboring counties in the same state.
