Africa on the map
The map numbers 54 countries, all UN members. Somaliland, Western Sahara, and Bir Tawil are drawn but not numbered: territories of another country or non-UN members.
Algeria is the largest country (919,595 sq mi) and Seychelles the smallest. Democratic Republic of the Congo has the most neighbors: it borders 9 countries.
16 countries are landlocked: Botswana, Burkina Faso, Burundi, Central African Republic, Chad, Eswatini, Ethiopia, Lesotho, Malawi, Mali, Niger, Rwanda and 4 more. 6 are island nations with no land borders: Cape Verde, Comoros, Madagascar, Mauritius, São Tomé and Príncipe, and Seychelles.
Number key
Numbers follow alphabetical order. Burundi, Cape Verde, Comoros, Djibouti, Equatorial Guinea, Eswatini, Guinea-Bissau, Lesotho, Mauritius, Rwanda and 4 more are too small for a number on A4 but keep their number in the table; A3 and Tabloid leave more room. With each country’s capital, for the capitals version:
