The 19 areas on the map

In the numbered version, each community gets a number in alphabetical order of its Spanish name; Ceuta and Melilla, which are autonomous cities, get theirs too. Names on the map are the official Spanish ones, as on Spanish maps. Here’s the key, with each community’s provinces, seat of government and area:

Facts for the classroom

Castilla y León is the largest community: 94,081 km² (36,325 sq mi), 18.6% of Spain. The smallest is Islas Baleares, at 4,987 km² (1,925 sq mi), and the autonomous cities barely show: Ceuta covers 20 km² and Melilla covers 14 km².

7 communities have a single province (Asturias, Islas Baleares, Cantabria, Comunidad de Madrid, Región de Murcia, Navarra, and La Rioja). Canarias has two capitals, Santa Cruz de Tenerife and Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, which share the seat of government, so the capitals version shows two dots.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use it in class?

Yes, it’s free. Print it, copy it and hand it out as many times as you like. If you post it on a blog or a class website, credit “Mapsfera · data IGN (CC BY 4.0)”.

How do I print it on US Letter paper?

Choose Letter in “Paper size” and click “Download PDF”. In the print window, pick Letter paper and 100% scale (“Actual size”). For a bigger map, choose Tabloid (11 × 17 in) or A3.

What order are the numbers in?

Alphabetical, from 1 to the last one. That makes the key easy to follow when you grade, and it’s the same key the worksheet’s answer page uses.

How many autonomous communities does Spain have?

17, plus the autonomous cities of Ceuta and Melilla. The map has 19 numbers.

Are the provinces shown?

No: this map shows only the borders between communities, so they’re easy to tell apart. For the provinces, use the blank map of Spain by province, which draws community borders thicker.
