The geographic center of every US state, recalculated
The state geographic centers quoted across the US come from a U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) list first published in 1923 and revised in the 1960s. We recalculated them with today’s Census Bureau boundaries and an explicit method: half of the USGS centers lie within 3.1 mi of ours, and in 40 of 47 states they fall in the same county.

Key figures
- 3.1 mi is the median distance between the USGS center and ours across the 50 states
- 40 of 47 states where our center falls in the same county the USGS names
- 23 mi west of the USGS center near Lebanon, Kansas, lies the center of the contiguous 48 states, still in Smith County
- 0.7 mi between our center of Hawaii, at sea between Maui and the Big Island, and the USGS one
Ready-to-quote facts
- Recalculated from Census boundaries, the geographic center of the contiguous US lies in Smith County, Kansas, 23 mi west of the USGS center near Lebanon, 0.9 mi (1.4 km) northeast of Kensington.
- In 40 of the 47 comparable states, the center falls in the same county the USGS gives; the exceptions are Arizona, Indiana, Kansas, Maryland, New York, Texas, and Virginia.
- Half of the USGS state centers are within 3.1 mi of the recalculated ones, and 34 of the 50 are within 5 miles.
- The largest gap is in Alaska: 34 mi, or 14 mi counting its islands, which the 1923 list included.
- With all 50 states, the center of the country lands by the Wyoming–South Dakota line, 18 mi from the USGS point in Butte County; at that scale, depending on how it is computed, it falls on one side of the line or the other.

The USGS center of the 48 states is the one found by the Coast and Geodetic Survey in 1918; those for 49 and 50 states come from the current USGS table. All three include every island.

Below the nearest populated place (GNIS), the nearest town of over 1,000 people (Census). “Same county” is not compared for Connecticut, which has had no counties in Census data since 2022, or Hawaii, whose center is at sea.
Method
What “center” means here
We use the USGS’s own definition: the center of gravity of the surface, the point where a cut-out of the state, of uniform thickness, would balance. We compute it as the area centroid on the GRS80 ellipsoid (the one used by NAD83) in a Lambert azimuthal equal-area projection centered on the result itself, which preserves areas.
Like the USGS, we leave islands out: the main center is that of the land connected by land to the continent in the Census boundaries (plus Point Roberts, an enclave in Canada). For states with islands we also give the center including them. Hawaii has no mainland: its center is that of all its islands, and we also give the center of the Island of Hawaiʻi.
Data
The boundaries are the counties in the Census Bureau’s 2025 Cartographic Boundary Files at 1:500,000, clipped to the shoreline and the Great Lakes: each state is built from its counties. For each center we give the county it falls in, the nearest GNIS populated place and the nearest Census place of over 1,000 people, with the distance and direction from them.
Every center was checked against a second, independent calculation, the center of gravity on the sphere with the simplified boundaries the website uses: the median difference is about 100 m, and the largest about 4.5 km, in Alaska, because of its size. For the whole country (49 and 50 states, from Hawaii to Maine) the two ways of computing the center differ by about 20 km: at that scale, the center depends on the definition.
The USGS centers
The USGS table was first published in 1923 (Bulletin 689, by Edward M. Douglas), revised in 1930 and 1966 (Bulletin 1212, by Franklin K. Van Zandt, now with Alaska and Hawaii) and still appears in Elevations and Distances in the United States. The USGS itself warns that there is no generally accepted definition of a geographic center and that its positions are approximations. The center of the 48 states, near Lebanon, Kansas, was found by the Coast and Geodetic Survey in 1918 by balancing a cardboard cut-out.
The USGS describes each center as “so many miles in some direction from a town”. To compare, we place it from that town’s GNIS point; over long distances the margin is several miles, because the direction has only 16 compass points.
Why they differ
The USGS centers were worked out a century ago on paper maps, with the techniques and precision of the time, and rounded to the mile. Boundaries have also changed: coastlines and rivers are now mapped in far more detail. The result also depends on which water counts as part of the state (the Census clips the coast and the Great Lakes, but not inland lakes) and on which islands are left out.
Large states are the most sensitive: a small difference in shape moves their center by tens of miles. Using another modern method, Peter Rogerson (University at Buffalo) placed the center of the 48 states near Agra, Kansas, in 2015, 27.9 miles from Lebanon; ours is 5.5 mi from Agra.

Frequently asked questions
Where is the geographic center of the United States?
For the contiguous 48 states, the USGS places it near Lebanon, Kansas; recalculated with today’s boundaries it lies 23 mi west, still in Smith County. For all 50 states the USGS places it in Butte County, South Dakota; recalculated, it lies by the Wyoming line, 18 mi away.
How is the center of a state calculated?
As the center of gravity of its area: the point where a cut-out of the state would balance. It is computed in a projection that preserves areas, so every part weighs what it measures.
Why doesn’t it match the USGS center?
The USGS worked it out a century ago on paper maps and published it rounded to the mile, with different boundaries and a different treatment of water and islands. Even so, half of its centers are within a few miles of ours.
Are islands included?
The main center excludes islands, as the USGS did. For states with islands we also give the center including them; for Hawaii, which is all islands, the center of the whole chain and that of the Island of Hawaiʻi.
