Australia on the map
Australia is divided into 6 states and 2 territories, 8 in all, covering about 7,710,000 km² (2,980,000 sq mi) as measured on the map. The largest is Western Australia (2,530,000 km² (978,000 sq mi)) and the smallest, Australian Capital Territory (2,350 km² (907 sq mi)): Western Australia is about 1,078 times bigger.
The capital is Canberra, in Australian Capital Territory. The capitals version marks the capital of each state.
A few remote islands of Queensland are left out so the rest of the map isn’t tiny. Jervis Bay Territory is drawn but not counted as a state.
What each state borders
South Australia borders the most states: 5 (New South Wales, Northern Territory, Queensland, Victoria, and Western Australia). Tasmania borders no other state: it is an island or archipelago.
Australia has no land border with another country.
7 states have a coastline and 1 don’t: Australian Capital Territory.
Number key
Numbers follow alphabetical order, from 1 (Australian Capital Territory) to 8 (Western Australia). Australian Capital Territory is too small for a number on A4 but keeps its number in the table. Areas are measured on the map and approximate; “Borders” counts neighboring states.
