Egypt on the map

Egypt is divided into 27 governorates, covering about 1,000,000 km² (387,000 sq mi) as measured on the map. The largest is New Valley (440,000 km² (170,000 sq mi)) and the smallest, Damietta (1,020 km² (393 sq mi)): New Valley is about 432 times bigger.

The capital is Cairo. The capitals version marks the capital of each governorate.

What each governorate borders

Giza borders the most governorates: 10 (Beheira, Beni Suef, Cairo, Faiyum, Qalyubia, Minya, Monufia, Matrouh, Suez, and New Valley).

Egypt borders Sudan, Libya, Israel, and Palestine. 3 governorates border Sudan: Aswan, New Valley, and Red Sea. 2 governorates border Libya: Matrouh and New Valley. 2 governorates border Israel: North Sinai and South Sinai. Only North Sinai borders Palestine.

11 governorates have a coastline and 16 don’t.

Number key

Numbers follow alphabetical order, from 1 (Alexandria) to 27 (Suez). Gharbia, Port Said, and Qalyubia are too small for a number on A4 but keep their number in the table. Areas are measured on the map and approximate; “Borders” counts neighboring governorates.
