Alaska on the map

Alaska has 19 boroughs and 11 census areas; only 14 states have fewer. The largest is Yukon-Koyukuk, with 145,767 sq mi of land, and the smallest is Skagway, with 443 sq mi: Yukon-Koyukuk is about 329 times bigger.

The state capital, Juneau, is merged with its borough: Juneau City and Borough. The capital version marks it on the map.

Anchorage Municipality is the most populous, with 287,155 people in 2025, or 39% of the state. The least populous is Yakutat, with 672. Since 2020, Matanuska-Susitna has grown the fastest (+10.8%) and Skagway has lost the most (−11.0%).

Alaska has no counties. It has boroughs, which govern like counties, and the rest of the state, the Unorganized Borough, which the Census splits into census areas. The Aleutians west of the Islands of Four Mountains, out to Attu, are shown in an inset at the bottom, out of place and at a different scale.

What each borough borders

Yukon-Koyukuk borders the most boroughs in the state: 9 (Bethel, Denali, Fairbanks North Star, Kusilvak, Matanuska-Susitna, Nome, North Slope, Northwest Arctic, and Southeast Fairbanks). Aleutians West borders no other borough: it is surrounded by water.

Alaska borders no other state.

13 boroughs border Canada: Copper River, Haines, Hoonah-Angoon, Juneau, Ketchikan Gateway, North Slope, Petersburg, Prince of Wales-Hyder, Skagway, Southeast Fairbanks, Wrangell, Yakutat, and Yukon-Koyukuk.

25 boroughs are on the coast. 2 boroughs are fully inland, with no coast and no border with another state or country.

Number key

Numbers follow alphabetical order, from 1 (Aleutians East) to 30 (Yukon-Koyukuk). Bristol Bay and Skagway are too small for a number on Letter or A4 but keep their number in the table; Tabloid and A3 fit more. Area is land area, without lakes or sea, and population is the Census estimate for July 1, 2025; “Borders” counts neighboring boroughs in the same state.

What order are the numbers in?

Alphabetical, from 1 to the last one. That makes the key easy to follow when you grade, and it’s the same key the worksheet’s answer page uses.
