Hawaii on the map
Hawaii has 5 counties; only one state has fewer. The largest is Hawaii, with 4,028 sq mi of land, and the smallest is Kalawao, with 12 sq mi: Hawaii is about 335 times bigger.
The state capital, Honolulu, is in Honolulu County. The capital version marks it on the map.
Honolulu County is the most populous, with 988,703 people in 2025, or 69% of the state. The least populous is also Kalawao, with 82. Since 2020, Hawaii has grown the fastest (+4.7%) and Honolulu has lost the most (−2.7%).
The Northwestern Hawaiian Islands (Papahānaumokuākea), part of Honolulu County, are left out: they stretch over 1,200 miles away and would make the rest of the map tiny. Kalawao, on Molokai, is the smallest county in the country and has no government of its own: the state Department of Health runs it.
What each county borders
Hawaii, Honolulu, and Kauai border no other county: they are islands.
Hawaii borders no other state.
Every county is on the coast.
Number key
Numbers follow alphabetical order, from 1 (Hawaii) to 5 (Maui). Kalawao is too small for a number on Letter or A4 but keeps its number in the table; Tabloid and A3 fit more. Area is land area, without lakes or sea, and population is the Census estimate for July 1, 2025; “Borders” counts neighboring counties in the same state.
| No. | County | Land area | Population (2025) | Borders |

| 2 | Honolulu | 601 sq mi | 988,703 | 0 |
| 3 | Kalawao | 12 sq mi | 82 | 1 |
| 4 | Kauai | 620 sq mi | 73,400 | 0 |
