California on the map

California has 58 counties; only 23 states have fewer. The largest is San Bernardino, with 20,068 sq mi of land, and the smallest is San Francisco, with 47 sq mi: San Bernardino is about 430 times bigger.

The state capital, Sacramento, is in Sacramento County. The capital version marks it on the map.

Los Angeles County is the most populous, with 9,694,934 people in 2025, or 25% of the state. The least populous is Alpine, with 1,043. Since 2020, Placer has grown the fastest (+9.2%) and Lassen has lost the most (−14.1%).

What each county borders

Fresno borders the most counties in the state: 8 (Inyo, Kings, Madera, Merced, Mono, Monterey, San Benito, and Tulare).

14 counties touch another state. 10 border Nevada: Alpine, El Dorado, Inyo, Lassen, Modoc, Mono, Nevada, Placer and 2 more. 3 border Oregon: Del Norte, Modoc, and Siskiyou. 3 border Arizona: Imperial, Riverside, and San Bernardino.

2 counties border Mexico: Imperial and San Diego.

19 counties are on the coast. 26 counties are fully inland, with no coast and no border with another state or country.

Number key

Numbers follow alphabetical order, from 1 (Alameda) to 58 (Yuba). Alameda, Amador, Contra Costa, El Dorado, Napa, Nevada, San Francisco, San Mateo, Santa Cruz, Sierra and 1 more are too small for a number on Letter or A4 but keep their number in the table; Tabloid and A3 fit more. Area is land area, without lakes or sea, and population is the Census estimate for July 1, 2025; “Borders” counts neighboring counties in the same state.
