New Mexico on the map

New Mexico has 33 counties; only 15 states have fewer. The largest is Catron, with 6,924 sq mi of land, and the smallest is Los Alamos, with 109 sq mi: Catron is about 63 times bigger.

The state capital, Santa Fe, is in Santa Fe County. The capital version marks it on the map.

Bernalillo County is the most populous, with 667,601 people in 2025, or 31% of the state. The least populous is Harding, with 617. Since 2020, Valencia has grown the fastest (+7.4%) and McKinley has lost the most (−6.5%).

What each county borders

Lincoln borders the most counties in the state: 7 (Chaves, De Baca, Guadalupe, Otero, Sierra, Socorro, and Torrance).

17 counties touch another state. 8 border Texas: Curry, Doña Ana, Eddy, Lea, Otero, Quay, Roosevelt, and Union. 6 border Arizona: Catron, Cibola, Grant, Hidalgo, McKinley, and San Juan. 5 border Colorado: Colfax, Rio Arriba, San Juan, Taos, and Union. Only Union borders Oklahoma.

3 counties border Mexico: Doña Ana, Hidalgo, and Luna.

None has a coastline: New Mexico is landlocked.

Number key

Numbers follow alphabetical order, from 1 (Bernalillo) to 33 (Valencia). Los Alamos is too small for a number on Letter or A4 but keeps its number in the table; Tabloid and A3 fit more. Area is land area, without lakes or sea, and population is the Census estimate for July 1, 2025; “Borders” counts neighboring counties in the same state.
