Colorado on the map
Colorado has 64 counties, the 24th most of any state (tied with one other). The largest is Las Animas, with 4,773 sq mi of land, and the smallest is Broomfield, with 33 sq mi: Las Animas is about 145 times bigger.
The state capital, Denver, is in Denver County. The capital version marks it on the map.
El Paso County is the most populous, with 757,040 people in 2025, or 13% of the state. The least populous is Hinsdale, with 753. Since 2020, Custer has grown the fastest (+18.8%) and Jackson has lost the most (−12.2%).
What each county borders
Jefferson borders the most counties in the state: 9 (Adams, Arapahoe, Boulder, Broomfield, Clear Creek, Denver, Douglas, Gilpin, and Park).
26 counties touch another state. 8 border Utah: Dolores, Garfield, Mesa, Moffat, Montezuma, Montrose, Rio Blanco, and San Miguel. 7 border New Mexico: Archuleta, Baca, Conejos, Costilla, La Plata, Las Animas, and Montezuma. 6 border Kansas: Baca, Cheyenne, Kiowa, Kit Carson, Prowers, and Yuma. 5 border Wyoming: Jackson, Larimer, Moffat, Routt, and Weld. 5 border Nebraska: Logan, Phillips, Sedgwick, Weld, and Yuma. Only Baca borders Oklahoma.
None has a coastline: Colorado is landlocked.
Number key
Numbers follow alphabetical order, from 1 (Adams) to 64 (Yuma). Broomfield is too small for a number on Letter or A4 but keeps its number in the table; Tabloid and A3 fit more. Area is land area, without lakes or sea, and population is the Census estimate for July 1, 2025; “Borders” counts neighboring counties in the same state.
