Illinois on the map

Illinois has 102 counties, the 7th most of any state. The largest is McLean, with 1,183 sq mi of land, and the smallest is Putnam, with 160 sq mi: McLean is about 7 times bigger.

The state capital, Springfield, is in Sangamon County. The capital version marks it on the map.

Cook County is the most populous, with 5,194,625 people in 2025, or 41% of the state. The least populous is Hardin, with 3,588. Since 2020, Kendall has grown the fastest (+10.3%) and Alexander has lost the most (−12.8%).

What each county borders

LaSalle borders the most counties in the state: 9 (Bureau, DeKalb, Grundy, Kendall, Lee, Livingston, Marshall, Putnam, and Woodford).

39 counties touch another state. 12 border Missouri: Adams, Alexander, Calhoun, Hancock, Jackson, Jersey, Madison, Monroe and 4 more. 12 border Indiana: Clark, Cook, Crawford, Edgar, Gallatin, Iroquois, Kankakee, Lawrence and 4 more. 7 border Iowa: Carroll, Hancock, Henderson, Jo Daviess, Mercer, Rock Island, and Whiteside. 6 border Kentucky: Alexander, Gallatin, Hardin, Massac, Pope, and Pulaski. 6 border Wisconsin: Boone, Jo Daviess, Lake, McHenry, Stephenson, and Winnebago.

2 counties are on the shore of the Great Lakes: Cook and Lake. 63 counties are fully inland, with no coast and no border with another state or country.

Number key

Numbers follow alphabetical order, from 1 (Adams) to 102 (Woodford). Boone, Cass, Edwards, Hardin, Pulaski, and Putnam are too small for a number on Letter or A4 but keep their number in the table; Tabloid and A3 fit more. Area is land area, without lakes or sea, and population is the Census estimate for July 1, 2025; “Borders” counts neighboring counties in the same state.
