Nebraska on the map

Nebraska has 93 counties, the 11th most of any state. The largest is Cherry, with 5,960 sq mi of land, and the smallest is Sarpy, with 238 sq mi: Cherry is about 25 times bigger.

The state capital, Lincoln, is in Lancaster County. The capital version marks it on the map.

Douglas County is the most populous, with 606,460 people in 2025, or 30% of the state. The least populous is McPherson, with 369. Since 2020, Sarpy has grown the fastest (+9.3%) and Boyd has lost the most (−8.0%).

What each county borders

Custer borders the most counties in the state: 9 (Blaine, Buffalo, Dawson, Garfield, Lincoln, Logan, Loup, Sherman, and Valley).

38 counties touch another state. 13 border Kansas: Dundy, Franklin, Furnas, Gage, Harlan, Hitchcock, Jefferson, Nuckolls and 5 more. 10 border South Dakota: Boyd, Cedar, Cherry, Dakota, Dawes, Dixon, Keya Paha, Knox and 2 more. 8 border Iowa: Burt, Cass, Dakota, Douglas, Otoe, Sarpy, Thurston, and Washington. 6 border Colorado: Chase, Cheyenne, Deuel, Dundy, Kimball, and Perkins. 4 border Wyoming: Banner, Kimball, Scotts Bluff, and Sioux. 3 border Missouri: Nemaha, Otoe, and Richardson.

None has a coastline: Nebraska is landlocked.

Number key

Numbers follow alphabetical order, from 1 (Adams) to 93 (York). Dakota, Douglas, and Sarpy are too small for a number on Letter or A4 but keep their number in the table; Tabloid and A3 fit more. Area is land area, without lakes or sea, and population is the Census estimate for July 1, 2025; “Borders” counts neighboring counties in the same state.
