Michigan on the map
Michigan has 83 counties, the 15th most of any state. The largest is Marquette, with 1,809 sq mi of land, and the smallest is Benzie, with 320 sq mi: Marquette is about 6 times bigger.
The state capital, Lansing, is in Ingham County, home to 95% of its residents; the city also reaches into Eaton County. The capital version marks it on the map.
Wayne County is the most populous, with 1,769,038 people in 2025, or 17% of the state. The least populous is Keweenaw, with 2,186. Since 2020, Lake has grown the fastest (+9.0%) and Huron has lost the most (−2.8%).
What each county borders
Jackson borders the most counties in the state: 7 (Calhoun, Eaton, Hillsdale, Ingham, Lenawee, Livingston, and Washtenaw).
11 counties touch another state. 5 border Indiana: Berrien, Branch, Cass, Hillsdale, and St. Joseph. 4 border Wisconsin: Dickinson, Gogebic, Iron, and Menominee. 3 border Ohio: Hillsdale, Lenawee, and Monroe.
4 counties border Canada: Chippewa, Monroe, St. Clair, and Wayne.
41 counties are on the shore of the Great Lakes. 35 counties are fully inland, with no coast and no border with another state or country.
Number key
Numbers follow alphabetical order, from 1 (Alcona) to 83 (Wexford). Antrim, Benzie, and Grand Traverse are too small for a number on Letter or A4 but keep their number in the table; Tabloid and A3 fit more. Area is land area, without lakes or sea, and population is the Census estimate for July 1, 2025; “Borders” counts neighboring counties in the same state.
