Japan on the map
Japan is divided into 47 prefectures, covering about 373,000 km² (144,000 sq mi) as measured on the map. The largest is Hokkaido (78,600 km² (30,400 sq mi)) and the smallest, Kagawa (1,850 km² (716 sq mi)): Hokkaido is about 42 times bigger.
The capital is Tokyo; Kyoto also serves as a capital. The capitals version marks the capital of each prefecture.
Okinawa is shown in an inset, out of place and at a different scale. A few remote islands of Okinawa and Tokyo are left out so the rest of the map isn’t tiny.
What each prefecture borders
Nagano borders the most prefectures: 8 (Gunma, Saitama, Niigata, Toyama, Yamanashi, Gifu, Shizuoka, and Aichi). Hokkaido and Okinawa border no other prefecture: they are islands.
Japan has no land border with another country.
39 prefectures have a coastline and 8 don’t: Gifu, Gunma, Nagano, Nara, Saitama, Shiga, Tochigi, and Yamanashi.
Number key
Numbers follow alphabetical order, from 1 (Aichi) to 47 (Yamanashi). Aichi, Hiroshima, Ishikawa, Kagawa, Kanagawa, Kochi, Kumamoto, Nara, Oita, Osaka and 8 more are too small for a number on A4 but keep their number in the table. Areas are measured on the map and approximate; “Borders” counts neighboring prefectures.
