Louisiana on the map

Louisiana has 64 parishes, the 24th most of any state (tied with one other). The largest is Vernon, with 1,327 sq mi of land, and the smallest is Orleans, with 170 sq mi: Vernon is about 8 times bigger.

The state capital, Baton Rouge, is in East Baton Rouge Parish. The capital version marks it on the map.

East Baton Rouge Parish is the most populous, with 456,180 people in 2025, or 10% of the state. The least populous is Tensas, with 3,700. Since 2020, Livingston has grown the fastest (+9.0%) and Cameron has lost the most (−16.0%).

In Louisiana, counties are called parishes, after the Catholic church parishes of French and Spanish colonial times. They work just like counties elsewhere.

What each parish borders

Assumption borders the most parishes in the state: 8 (Ascension, Iberia, Iberville, Lafourche, St. James, St. Martin, St. Mary, and Terrebonne).

23 parishes touch another state. 10 border Mississippi: Concordia, East Carroll, East Feliciana, Madison, St. Helena, St. Tammany, Tangipahoa, Tensas and 2 more. 8 border Arkansas: Bossier, Caddo, Claiborne, East Carroll, Morehouse, Union, Webster, and West Carroll. 7 border Texas: Beauregard, Caddo, Calcasieu, Cameron, De Soto, Sabine, and Vernon.

11 parishes are on the coast: Cameron, Iberia, Jefferson, Lafourche, Orleans, Plaquemines, St. Bernard, St. Mary, St. Tammany, Terrebonne, and Vermilion. 32 parishes are fully inland, with no coast and no border with another state or country.

Number key

Numbers follow alphabetical order, from 1 (Acadia) to 64 (Winn). Area is land area, without lakes or sea, and population is the Census estimate for July 1, 2025; “Borders” counts neighboring parishes in the same state.

Frequently asked questions

How many parishes does Louisiana have?

64 parishes. That’s the 24th most of any state.

What is the largest parish in Louisiana?

Vernon, with 1,327 sq mi of land. The smallest is Orleans, with 170 sq mi.

What is the most populous parish in Louisiana?

East Baton Rouge Parish, with an estimated 456,180 people in 2025, or 10% of the state.

What parish is Baton Rouge in?

The state capital, Baton Rouge, is in East Baton Rouge Parish.

Why does Louisiana have parishes instead of counties?

Because of its French and Spanish past: the first divisions of the territory were Catholic church parishes, and the name stuck in 1807. Today they work like any other county.

Can I use it in class?

Yes, it’s free. Print it, copy it and hand it out as many times as you like. If you post it on a blog or a class website, credit “Mapsfera · data US Census Bureau”.

How do I print it on US Letter paper?

Choose Letter in “Paper size” and click “Download PDF”. In the print window, pick Letter paper and 100% scale (“Actual size”). For a bigger map, choose Tabloid (11 × 17 in) or A3.

What order are the numbers in?

Alphabetical, from 1 to the last one. That makes the key easy to follow when you grade, and it’s the same key the worksheet’s answer page uses.
