Kentucky on the map
Kentucky has 120 counties, the 4th most of any state. The largest is Pike, with 786 sq mi of land, and the smallest is Gallatin, with 98 sq mi: Pike is about 8 times bigger.
The state capital, Frankfort, is in Franklin County. The capital version marks it on the map.
Jefferson County is the most populous, with 795,222 people in 2025, or 17% of the state. The least populous is Robertson, with 2,325. Since 2020, Warren has grown the fastest (+11.0%) and Breathitt has lost the most (−8.5%).
What each county borders
Hardin borders the most counties in the state: 8 (Breckinridge, Bullitt, Grayson, Hart, Jefferson, Larue, Meade, and Nelson).
48 counties touch another state. 17 border Tennessee: Allen, Bell, Calloway, Christian, Clinton, Cumberland, Fulton, Graves and 9 more. 13 border Indiana: Boone, Breckinridge, Carroll, Daviess, Gallatin, Hancock, Hardin, Henderson and 5 more. 9 border Ohio: Boone, Boyd, Bracken, Campbell, Greenup, Kenton, Lewis, Mason and 1 more. 5 border Illinois: Ballard, Crittenden, Livingston, McCracken, and Union. 4 border Missouri: Ballard, Carlisle, Fulton, and Hickman. 4 border Virginia: Bell, Harlan, Letcher, and Pike.
None has a coastline: Kentucky is landlocked.
Number key
Numbers follow alphabetical order, from 1 (Adair) to 120 (Woodford). Anderson, Boyd, Boyle, Breathitt, Bullitt, Carlisle, Carroll, Clinton, Elliott, Fulton and 26 more are too small for a number on Letter or A4 but keep their number in the table; Tabloid and A3 fit more. Area is land area, without lakes or sea, and population is the Census estimate for July 1, 2025; “Borders” counts neighboring counties in the same state.
