North Carolina on the map

North Carolina has 100 counties, the 8th most of any state. The largest is Robeson, with 947 sq mi of land, and the smallest is Chowan, with 173 sq mi: Robeson is about 5 times bigger.

The state capital, Raleigh, is in Wake County, home to 99% of its residents; the city also reaches into Durham County. The capital version marks it on the map.

Wake County is the most populous, with 1,257,235 people in 2025, or 11% of the state. The least populous is Tyrrell, with 3,537. Since 2020, Brunswick has grown the fastest (+27.8%) and Hertford has lost the most (−11.8%).

What each county borders

Iredell borders the most counties in the state: 9 (Alexander, Cabarrus, Catawba, Davie, Lincoln, Mecklenburg, Rowan, Wilkes, and Yadkin).

41 counties touch another state. 15 border Virginia: Alleghany, Ashe, Camden, Caswell, Currituck, Gates, Granville, Hertford and 7 more. 15 border South Carolina: Anson, Brunswick, Cleveland, Columbus, Gaston, Henderson, Jackson, Mecklenburg and 7 more. 10 border Tennessee: Ashe, Avery, Cherokee, Graham, Haywood, Madison, Mitchell, Swain and 2 more. 3 border Georgia: Cherokee, Clay, and Macon.

19 counties are on the coast. 44 counties are fully inland, with no coast and no border with another state or country.

Number key

Numbers follow alphabetical order, from 1 (Alamance) to 100 (Yancey). Alamance, Alleghany, Avery, Cabarrus, Caldwell, Camden, Chowan, Clay, Davie, Durham and 19 more are too small for a number on Letter or A4 but keep their number in the table; Tabloid and A3 fit more. Area is land area, without lakes or sea, and population is the Census estimate for July 1, 2025; “Borders” counts neighboring counties in the same state.
