Chile on the map

Chile is divided into 16 regions, covering about 736,000 km² (284,000 sq mi) as measured on the map. The largest is Antofagasta (123,000 km² (47,600 sq mi)) and the smallest, Ñuble (13,500 km² (5,220 sq mi)): Antofagasta is about 9 times bigger.

The capital is Santiago, in Metropolitana de Santiago; Valparaíso also serves as a capital. The capitals version marks the capital of each region.

A few remote islands of Valparaíso are left out so the rest of the map isn’t tiny.

What each region borders

O'Higgins borders the most regions: 3 (Maule, Metropolitana de Santiago, and Valparaíso).

Chile borders Argentina, Bolivia, and Peru. 14 regions border Argentina: Antofagasta, Atacama, Aysén, Biobío, Coquimbo, La Araucanía, Los Lagos, Los Ríos and 6 more. 3 regions border Bolivia: Antofagasta, Arica y Parinacota, and Tarapacá. Only Arica y Parinacota borders Peru.

15 regions have a coastline and 1 don’t: Metropolitana de Santiago.

Number key

Numbers follow alphabetical order, from 1 (Antofagasta) to 16 (Valparaíso). Arica y Parinacota, Coquimbo, La Araucanía, Los Ríos, Metropolitana de Santiago, Ñuble, O'Higgins, and Valparaíso are too small for a number on A4 but keep their number in the table. Areas are measured on the map and approximate; “Borders” counts neighboring regions.
