France on the map
France is divided into 96 departments in metropolitan France and 5 overseas, 101 in all, covering about 636,000 km² (245,000 sq mi) as measured on the map. The largest is Guyane (83,600 km² (32,300 sq mi)) and the smallest, Paris (129 km² (50 sq mi)): Guyane is about 648 times bigger.
The capital is Paris. The capitals version marks the capital of each department. The departments are grouped into 18 regions, drawn with a thicker line: French Guiana, Hauts-de-France, Grand Est, Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur, Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, Nouvelle-Aquitaine, Occitania, Bourgogne-Franche-Comté, Pays de la Loire, Brittany, Normandy, Martinique, Guadeloupe, Réunion, Mayotte, Corsica, Centre-Val de Loire, and Île-de-France.
Guadeloupe, Guyane, La Réunion, Martinique, and Mayotte are shown in insets, out of place and at a different scale.
What each department borders
Seine-et-Marne borders the most departments: 10 (Aisne, Aube, Loiret, Marne, Oise, Yonne, Essonne, Seine-Saint-Denis, Val-de-Marne, and Val-d'Oise). Guadeloupe, La Réunion, Martinique, and Mayotte border no other department: they are islands.
France borders Switzerland, Belgium, Italy, Spain, Germany, Andorra, Luxembourg, Monaco, Brazil, and Suriname. 6 departments border Switzerland: Ain, Doubs, Haut-Rhin, Haute-Savoie, Jura, and Territoire de Belfort. 5 departments border Belgium: Aisne, Ardennes, Meurthe-et-Moselle, Meuse, and Nord. 5 departments border Italy: Alpes-de-Haute-Provence, Alpes-Maritimes, Haute-Savoie, Hautes-Alpes, and Savoie. 5 departments border Spain: Ariège, Haute-Garonne, Hautes-Pyrénées, Pyrénées-Atlantiques, and Pyrénées-Orientales.
31 departments have a coastline and 70 don’t.
Number key
Numbers follow alphabetical order, from 1 (Ain) to 101 (Yvelines). Essonne, Hauts-de-Seine, Paris, Rhône, Seine-Saint-Denis, Territoire de Belfort, Val-d'Oise, and Val-de-Marne are too small for a number on A4 but keep their number in the table. Areas are measured on the map and approximate; “Borders” counts neighboring departments.
