Greece on the map
Greece is divided into 13 regions (periphereies), covering about 131,000 km² (50,500 sq mi) as measured on the map. The largest is Central Macedonia (19,200 km² (7,420 sq mi)) and the smallest, Ionian Islands (2,240 km² (864 sq mi)): Central Macedonia is about 9 times bigger.
The capital is Athens, in Attica. The capitals version marks the capital of each region.
Mount Athos is drawn but not counted as a region.
What each region borders
Thessaly borders the most regions: 4 (Central Macedonia, Western Macedonia, Epirus, and Central Greece). Crete, Ionian Islands, North Aegean, and South Aegean border no other region: they are islands.
Greece borders North Macedonia, Bulgaria, Albania, and Turkey. 2 regions border North Macedonia: Central Macedonia and Western Macedonia. 2 regions border Bulgaria: Central Macedonia and Eastern Macedonia and Thrace. 2 regions border Albania: Epirus and Western Macedonia. Only Eastern Macedonia and Thrace borders Turkey.
12 regions have a coastline and 1 don’t: Western Macedonia.
