Switzerland on the map

Switzerland is divided into 26 cantons, covering about 41,300 km² (16,000 sq mi) as measured on the map. The largest is Grisons (7,000 km² (2,700 sq mi)) and the smallest, Basel-Stadt (40 km² (15 sq mi)): Grisons is about 175 times bigger.

The capital is Bern. The capitals version marks the capital of each canton.

What each canton borders

Bern borders the most cantons: 11 (Aargau, Fribourg, Jura, Lucerne, Neuchâtel, Nidwalden, Obwalden, Solothurn, Uri, Vaud, and Valais).

Switzerland borders France, Germany, Italy, Austria, and Liechtenstein. 8 cantons border France: Basel-Landschaft, Basel-Stadt, Geneva, Jura, Neuchâtel, Solothurn, Valais, and Vaud. 6 cantons border Germany: Aargau, Basel-Landschaft, Basel-Stadt, Schaffhausen, Thurgau, and Zürich. 3 cantons border Italy: Grisons, Ticino, and Valais. 3 cantons border Austria: Grisons, St. Gallen, and Thurgau.

Switzerland is landlocked: none of its cantons has a coastline.

Number key

Numbers follow alphabetical order, from 1 (Aargau) to 26 (Zürich). Appenzell Innerrhoden and Basel-Stadt are too small for a number on A4 but keep their number in the table. Areas are measured on the map and approximate; “Borders” counts neighboring cantons.
